The first annual "Downtown Artwalk!" is set to take place on Saturday, October 18, 2008 from
11 am-3 pm along the sidewalks of the 200 and 300 blocks of Kleberg Avenue.
This event will feature local artists from
Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) South Texas Art Society and performances by artists from the surrounding area
to display their talents, while offering the community a chance to enjoy time in the downtown area. These artists along with
Ballet Folklorico de Ortiz, TAMUK Belly Dancers and more will perform at various sites in the 200-300 blocks of Kleberg Avenue
as well as in front of Kleberg First National Bank.
There will also be an entire area at the Cherry Tree Tea Room devoted
solely to children during the Artwalk. At this location children can spend their time immersed in a world of art and creativity.
As kids visit the Imagination Station, they will discover their own artistic talents as they decorate homemade cookies, do
face painting, paint pumpkins, and make masks; all free of charge.
Downtown restaurants including Harrell's Soda
Fountain, Cherry Tree Tea Room and the Smokin Rooster will be open for lunch and citizens are encouraged to take advantage
of this opportunity and shop, dine and enjoy the downtown atmosphere.
"We hope the community will enjoy
this art festival", says Co-Chair of KHDDA Rose Morales, "because the focus is on just that....viewing, participating,
and supporting our local art talent."
Another highlight of the Downtown Artwalk will be a Sidewalk Chalk Competition
open to the public. All contestants will be given one box of chalk with pre-set colors, which they will use to create art
that is appropriate for all age groups. While this chalk art gallery is temporary, the memories are lasting. Space is limited
therefore advance registration is encouraged. Pick up registration forms at King Ranch Saddle Shop.
